    Location description

Casilla La Rambla's location within the Subbetica National Park provides plenty of scope for you to explore stunning countryside and picturesque villages by foot, car, or even mountain bike.

The Park is a district made up of fourteen towns in the south of the province of Cordoba, in the heart of Andalusia. The area is not touristy and has some of the prettiest white towns and villages in Andalucia. It covers 159.190 hectares and is the home to mammals such as the wild cat and boar. The is also a wide variety of bird life in the park including the black wheater, hoopoe, cuckoo, red legged partridge, rock bunting and alpine swifts. In the outcrops and limestone crags the golden eagle, griffon vulture and short-toed eagle have all made their homes, together with the peregrine falcon which is the parks emblem.

The municipality has steep sierras, twisting rivers, springs of clear water, castle and mediaeval watchtowers - bringing back its past as a frontier land.

There is much to discover, including archaeological deposits, impressive Renaissance and Baroque architecture, and beautiful Arabic Andalusian villages.

    Walks

There are many fine walks within the Subbetica National Park and other surrounding Parks, varying in degrees of difficulty. Short distant paths are the most common and are for half day, full day and weekend trips range from 10 - 50 km. Go for a nice walk and remember 'One day of hiking is worth one week of health.' We supply information, leaflets and maps at the villa.

    National Parks

NATIONAL PARKS IN THE PROVINCE OF CORDOBA (1 hour)
The Parque Natural Sierra de Hornachuelos is located to the west of the province, the park belongs to the Sierra Morena or 'dark hills' named after the colour of the slate it is mainly made up of. This is the largest protected area in the province. The park is a Mediterranean eco-system of low lying mountains with a predominance of pine, holm and cork oaks. The excellent preservation of the area's vegetation has allowed the local animal species to develop, including the imperial eagle, the golden eagle, Egyptian vulture, goshawk, sparrow hawk and mammals such as mongoose, wolf and lynx. The Sierra de Hornachuelos is now home to the second largest colony of black vultures in Andalucia, as well as three colonies of Griffin Vulture. Large population of deer and wild boar have led to the park being considered one of the finest hunting reserves in the country. There are many fine walks in this area and information can be found at the tourist centre in the main square. More information on the park can be obtained from a visitors centre which is a 15 minute walk from the town on the C0-142 heading north towards San Calixto.

The Parque Natural de La Sierra Gardena-Montoro is located in the north-east of Cordoba province, in the central area of the huge Sierra Morena hill range. In the west, the park consists of gentle flat relief, which contrasts with the beautiful brusque and craggy gorges and ravines along the River Yeguas, which runs through the park for 40 kilometres.

EL TORCAL NATIONAL PARK (1 hour)
Situated in the province of Malaga the park is known for its unusual limestone rock formations, which have been slowly weathered into bizarre rock formations and caves. Walking routes through the park have been marked by different coloured arrows. The park is also a pleasure for natural historians, with fox and weasel populations and colonies of golden and Bonelli eagles, hawks and vultures. It also protects rare plants and flowers, 664 plant species have been catalogued, among them, species of wild orchid, (more than 20 species). The most important group are, without doubt the rock plants, which adapt to and flourish in the cracks between the rocks formations.

Delightful Towns and Villages We Recommend You Visit

    ZUHEROS (20 minutes)
The most attractive spot in the Subbetica region. Zuheros is a quiet and enchanting white village sandwiched into a pocket of land surrounded by a semi-circle of high limestone crags. With its narrow streets and wonderful views it's a place not to miss, we recommend a wonderful restaurant in the main square. Four kilometres above the town is the Cueva de los Murcielagos, these caves have important Chalcolithic and Neolithis wall paintings of humans and animals. It's a stiff hour's walk up to the caves or a short drive from Zuheros, but worth it as the views are fantastic. There are many walks from Zuheros including the valley of the Eagles. Zuheros is just a 20m minute drive from the finca and maps for walking this area are available from us.

    PRIEGO DE CORDOBA (20 minutes)
This is one of the most interesting provincial towns of Cordoba province. It is a pleasant small town with an unassuming air. The town's labyrinthine old quarter was the site of the original Arab settlement. Impeccably white-washed buildings line its narrow streets. Paseo Colombia leads to the Adarve, a long promenade with excellent views of the surrounding countryside. A recently restored Moorish fortress standing on Roman foundations, introduces visitors to the fine medieval quarter which is call Barrio de la Villa. This is an enchanting area tucked away behind the church. Follow the small lanes into some of the most picturesque lanes imaginable, the walls all white-washed and groaning with a wealth of flower pots. Make sure you reach tiny Plaza San Anbtonio in the heart of it. The Carnicerias Reales ( Royal Market) is an outstanding place, its beautiful façade is in the mannerist style and inside you will find a galleried patio and a wonderful stone, spiral staircase. The Fuente del Ray ( Kings Fountain) is the town's most emblematic national monument and without doubt its crowning glory, made up of 3 pools and surrounded by 139 fountain heads with a continual flow of water. In the same local square is La Fuente de Salud (The Fountain of Health) this is also a national monument, with a front piece in the mannerist style. The municipal area of Priego (north) is dotted with small villages which gives the area a special kind of beauty. A circular car journey of these villages is recommended.

    CABRA (15 minutes)
Cabra lies in the geographical centre of Andalucia and is the gateway to 'La Subbetica' mountain range. Surrounded by rich vegetable gardens, vast olive groves and guarded by impressive mountainous terrains, it seems like an oasis in the middle of the Cordoban countryside. This is a carefully preserved historical town where picturesque Andalucia style corners can be found. The first days of May with the flourish of the geranium, the typical neighbour of 'El Cerro' prepares its festival. The neighbours of this white neighbourhood open their doors showering their visits with hospitality, showing the charms of their patios, white-washed and full of flowers. Just outside the town is the Fuente del Rio, source of the Rio Cabra. This is a pleasantly leafy spot in which to picnic or walk; from here you can join the Via Verde or Green Route. This is a recovered area of the Ten del Aceita or Oil Train line which can be enjoyed by cyclists and walkers. The route is 58 kilometres long and links many towns of the Subbetica. The beautiful scenery of the nature park and the Laguna del Salobral nature reserve combines with the railway architecture that has been conserved to include bridges, stations, level crossings and guardhouses and even a tunnel.

    IZNAJAR (40 minutes)
Iznajar is perched high on a hill side and well worth the visit. The Reservoir, also known as the Lake of Andalusia, is 32 kilometres long and creates a suitable residence for animal life in the aquatic environment. An ideal place for the observation of birds, fishing, the practice of nautical sports, walking or just chilling out on the beach. To the east of the Lake is the Dam and from here you can take a wonderful walk around the side of the lake.

Cities and Towns Not To Miss

    CORDOBA (45 minutes)
Many of Andalucia's towns and villages preserve their Moorish past, none more so than Cordoba with its great Mosque, The Mezquita. The temple is more than a historical and archaeological monument, it is a unique embodiment of over eight centuries of architectural and artistic change. More than 850 columns of granite, jasper and marble support the roof, creating a dazzling visual effect. A walk around Cordoba itself gives the visitor the sensation that little has changed since this was one of the greatest cities in the Western World. Narrow, cobbled streets where cars cannot penetrate, secluded niches, wrought iron gates, all appears very much as it was 1,000 years ago. In early May Cordoba opens its gardens for the Festival of flowers. Since early times, family and social life in Andalucia has revolved around the courtyard or patio, which is at the heart of the classic Mediterranean house. Brick arches, colourful tiles, ironwork, orange and lemon trees, and pots full of flowers add to the charm of these cool and tranquil retreats. Cordoba takes pride in all its patio gardens and palatial spaces in the grandest residence or tiny courtyards in humble homes. There are traditional patios in the San Lorenzo and Juderia quarters and in the Barrio san Basilio, west of the Mezquita.

    GRANADA (1½ hours)
You cannot speak of Granada without thinking of the Alhambra. A magical use of space, light and water characterizes this most sensual piece of architecture. The Generalife located north of the Alhambra was the country estate of the Nasrid kings. Here they could escape the intrigues of the palace and enjoy tranquillity high above the city, a little closer to heaven. Tickets for the Alhambra must be purchased some time before your visit, via web site or by telephone, as only a limited number of people are allowed at any one time. Visiting times are in two sessions, 8am - 2pm and 2pm - 8pm. Evening are good as the Alhambra looks magical in the evenings.

Sierra Nevada just 30 minutes from the city, consists of fourteen peaks more than 9,800 ft high. The snow lingers until July and begins falling again in late autumn. With a total of 61 kilometres spread over 39 runs, plus 6 sensational off course trails, Sierra Nevada is a place to visit if snow is your passion. Night skiing, snow boarding, snow bikes and husky dog sleigh rides are also available.

    ANTEQUERA (30 minutes)
You know a town must be pretty old when the Romans named it 'ancient place' of Antikria. The old town has numerous noble buildings of great interest. Many of the churches are magnificent and should not be missed if you are interested in architecture. Antequera's rich archaeological heritage is represented in the Museo Municipal. Just outside Antequera is Laguna de la Fuentra de Piedra, this large saltwater lake is one of Europe's most important breeding grounds for the greater flamingo. The loveably awkward pinkish birds arrive early in the year to raise their chicks and hang around until the water level drops in summer. There are dozens of other water species present. There is an information centre by the lake which hires binoculars and provides advice. There is also a donkey sanctuary near by and a Wolf Park near Antequera lake. A days golf is also available at an impressive 18 hole par 72 course, with 10 lakes and stunning views of the mountains.

    ECIJA (30 minutes)
Ecija is nicknamed 'the frying pan of Andalucia' owing to its torrid climate, therefore the palm trees which stand on the Plaza de Espana provide blissful shade, just the place to sit and observe daily life whilst taking a welcome drink. Ecija has 11 Baroque church steeples, most are cheerfully coloured in bright yellow and blue ceramic tiles, together they make an impressive sight. Those with a liking for architecture should not miss this town.

    AQUASIERRA WATER PARK
Located just 14 highway miles or 15 driving minutes East of the provincial capital of Cordoba, Aquasierra features about ten acres of water surface and spacious sunbathing and relaxing areas with postcard perfect panoramic vistas, making it one of the most spectacular water parks throughout the state of Andalusia.

Since 1990, the water park's facilities had been constantly improved, so that Aquasierra's guests may enjoy the most modern amenities and have a lasting leisure time experience.

A number of water slides, including the so called Pistas blandas, the Black Hole tube slide, the Kamikaze highspeed slide, two wildwater experiences, the speed board slide and the kid adventure area with new attractions (Frog and Octopus) make sure kids and adults will have plenty of fun.

Of course, the skilled lifeguard and service staff guarantee a maximum of safety and well-being at any time.

Aquasierra provides two large pools, of which the large one was equipped with a beach to allow even persons with disabilities access to the water. The smaller pool is dedicated to kids under twelve years.

Furthermore, Aquasierra provides a full range of eating and drinking facilities. Also there are designated areas where guests may have food they brought themselves.

For the safety of the belongings of Aquasierra's guests, the water park also has a number of lockers.

Finally, the water quality is outstanding and is subject to permanent control.
