Gallura is basically the North East section of Sardinia, the direct translation means 'area located on high ground'. It is very beautiful and unspoilt, with an indented coastline characterised by beautiful sandy beaches and hidden coves, most approached via dirt tracks. There are no high rises behind these beaches, just the traditional unspoilt sweet smelling, and in springtime colourful marquis (undergrowth). The mountain terrain is strewn with huge and in many cases precarious granite rocks. The coast road between Porto Cervo and Pittulongu rivals the French Corniche. Probably best known as the famous Costa Smeralda, or Emerald coast, the area is one of great extremes. The jet set marinas of Porto Cervo and Porto Rotundo, and the unspoilt natural interior and traditional mountain villages easily accessible from the coast. A wonder to explore.
