The Department of the Charente is centred on the river that provides its name which rises in the neighbouring Vienne and meanders through the department growing wider as it flows into the Charente-Maritime and out into the Atlantic. The river became an important thoroughfare for trade as it is navigable for large craft from Angouleme all the way to the sea. The nearby large town of Ruffec sits on a tributary of the Charente and has a leisure area on the main river just outside the town where there is a canoe, kayak and cycle hire base, lovely restaurant and swimming area surveyed by lifeguards in the summer months. Angouleme itself is the capital city of the department and is an ancient fortified hilltop city with the original ramparts still mainly intact with narrow streets inside the old city and a large pedestrianised area in the ancient quarter full of bars, restaurants and interesting shops. Angouleme is also the centre of the French comic strip and cartoon industry with a museum dedicated the to the subject, an annual festival in February and even a theme park planned for the near future. In addition, the city holds a number of weekend and week-long events throughout the year with a music festival in July, classic car show with racing on the rampart roads in September and a gastronomic festival in November as well as many smaller events. Cognac the town that gives the famous drink its name is less than an hour away and all the famous Cognac houses do tours and events all year round. Cognac and its near neighbour Jarnac where there are several Cognac producers are based, both sit on the Charente river and offer river tours from a couple of hours to weekly cabin cruiser hire.
