** Our village of Diever has been voted by Dutch consumers as being one of the best holiday destinations in the Netherlands!**
Our farmhouse will provide all amenities for the most perfect stay in Diever - an historic Drenthe village - at the heart of rural Netherlands and surrounded by areas of stunning natural beauty.
The farmhouse has cable TV (including UK and American channels) and there is a selection of films on DVD, as well as a CD collection and English language books.
There is also fast and secure wireless internet access throughout the farmhouse.
For children, there are soft toys, games and books available while 2 cots, 2 high chairs and a baby bath will help accommodate our youngest guests.
Comprehensive tourist information covering Diever village and the surrounding areas (including Friesland, its islands and Overijssel), as well as most major tourist attractions in the Netherlands is provided.
The surrounding area:
- Diever is at the center of an abundance of historical sites and attractions for adults and children of all ages. Diversity on your doorstep!
- It is just a 10-minute walk to reach the forests of the Drents-Friese Wold (6,100 hectares / 15,070 acres), one of the largest National parks of the Netherlands, with its 32 marked walks & numerous cycle paths. Also situated close by the National Park Dwingelderveld (3,692 hectares / 9,120 acres) - the largest moorland on the European Continent - with its 60 kms (37 miles) of walking trails & 40 kms (25 miles) of bicycle paths. Perfect for hiking, biking, riding, birdwatching or just picnicking!
- Get a glimpse of life in the Netherlands during the 18th century at the ‘working‘ village of Orvelte.
- Visit the WWII transit camp at Westerbork – to where Anne Frank and her family were brought.
- Take in the many museums (25, at the last count) that will provide an interest to each member of your group.
- For teenagers, there are 18 fun parks and, for our younger guests, enchanting ‘fairy tale’ parks nearby.
- While the city of Groningen ('shop till you drop') & the German border are all less than an hour's drive, the provincial capital at Assen is just a 25-minute drive away!
- Not forgetting a day-out to the new 'Wildlands' attraction park/zoo in Emmen, while for those looking for more sporty activities, sailing, boat excursions & fishing can be enjoyed at Giethoorn (the ‘Venice of the North’).
- Also, there is an 18-hole golf course available in Havelte (14km/9 miles away).
- Want to visit the beach as well? The Frisian islands make a great day out with some of the best beaches in the Netherlands:
Terschelling island -
The ferry to Terschelling leaves from Harlingen, Friesland (1 hr 45 mins ferry crossing).
Ameland island-
A ferry service runs from Holwerd, Friesland (45 minutes by catamaran or 120 mins by regular ferry). Excursions are available from Ameland to visit seal colonies on Robbeneiland.
Schiermonnikoog island -
The ferry runs several times a day from Lauwersoog, Groningen (45 minutes crossing time).
The ports are around 1 1/2 hours from Diever.
So, whether it's picnicking in the forest, taking a dip in a forest bathing pool or going by horseback along one of the many marked trails, you won’t be disappointed by this area's rich heritage, its welcoming, English-speaking people and its unending choice of excursions and attractions.
Come and visit the real Netherlands!
Using the farmhouse as a base to explore the Netherlands:
- Are you looking for a central base in which to explore the Netherlands?
Apart from being able to explore the north and east of the country with ease, ‘Under the Oaks’ is also very centrally located for visiting both the south / south-west of the Netherlands, as well as the west of the country. The travelling times for reaching these areas are considerably shorter than travelling via the highway network in the west of the country, as our roads and highways here in the north and east are less congested.
Being situated in the south-west corner of Drenthe, Diever is placed at the crossroads of three Dutch provinces - Drenthe, Overijssel and Friesland - all uniquely different to one another. So when you are in Drenthe, why not discover Friesland and Overijssel provinces as well - the borders lie just 15 minutes away by car, with the highway just 11 kms (7 miles) away!
Driving times from Diever to other parts of the Netherlands?
- it’s less than 2 hours from Diever to the southern city of Eindhoven (the Belgian border is just south of there).
A visit to Amsterdam while staying in Diever?
- many of our guests drive the 45 minutes to the suburbs of Almere, and then take the short train journey from there into Amsterdam city. It’s much easier to park your car outside the city and use the fast and efficient public transport from there!
Wishing to explore Rotterdam and The Hague in the south-west of the country as well?
- these cities are also just 90–120 minutes away. Again, travelling times from our region to these cities is faster than from many other parts of the country, as the highway network via Zwolle to Utrecht has lighter traffic.
We want you to have a wonderful and memorable holiday!
It is our pleasure to be of assistance to you during your stay and our priority to make sure that you will have a pleasant time at the holiday farmhouse. We are happy to offer any help on preparing your trip.
Please email with any questions you may have about the farmhouse, Diever, Drenthe or anything at all to do with the Netherlands!

Under the Oaks- superb accommodation
We are a family group of 11 (babies to pensioners) and have been staying here for 10 years. The standard of accommodation and cleanliess is always of the highest quality and we have felt so welcomed by the owners David and Monique. They have been fantastic in helping us discover their region (there is SO much to do!) and in solving any little query we might have. We cannot reccommend Under the Oaks highly enough - a true holiday 'home'.

''The owners were very gracious and helpful, including helping us make arrangements with Dutch speakers at places we wanted to visit. The house was in good condition and the amenities were as advertised, and in some respects better than advertised. The location is good and provides convenient access to much of the east and northeast Netherlands. The neighborhood was quiet and the surroundings were pleasant''.

''For a quiet and peaceful break, we found this place to be perfect. A beautiful cottage in a beautiful village. As Holland is so small, and we had a car, travelling to places was easy from Diever aswell as being a great place to get away and chill out from everything.Restaurants and shopping all within walking distance and the cottage had everything that you would need. Our hosts made sure we had food in the cottage on arrival and showed us around the village when we arrived so we new where everything was. They were also available at any time to answer any questions or give advice. On our trip around Europe we found this place of a weeks accommodation the best value''.

''What a great place! The area is magnificent loads to do and see. Bike hire is cheap and simple - aided by the fact that nearly everyone speaks English which is a bonus when negotiating rentals. the house itself was better than we imagined - 3 adults and 3 very active young children and we still weren't tripping over each other. David and Monique were a godsend (so was the route planner) nothing was too much trouble. Pity they couldn't sort out the weather as easily as they found the information we needed. Overall an excellent holiday and one I would not hesitate to recommend to any one''.

''Wij hebben een heerlijk weekend gehad in deze leuke vakantiewoning. De woning is ruim, schoon en heeft heerlijke bedden. Het dorp is klein en erg gezellig. Vanuit de woning kun je mooie wandelingen en fietstochten maken. Een bezoekje aan Giethoorn en daar een boot huren vinden wij een aanrader''.

''I would highly recommend this property, the accommodation was spacious, comfortable and very clean. Gnd floor bedroom ideal for elderly as shower and WC easily accessible. Steep stairs to first floor with stair gate provided, all bedrooms comfortable and airy. Well-equipped kitchen. The owner has provided books and games in case of bad weather. Welcome pack on our arrival was a very nice touch. Situated in the centre of a busy village, close to local shops, restaurants and well stocked supermarket nearby. Diever is ideal for horse riding and cycling with many cycle paths close by, cycle hire is easily available. Lots to do in and around the area with a good bus service. We found the Dutch people were very friendly and helpful and we never found communicating a problem. The owner, David and family were extremely hospitable and nothing was too much trouble. We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday in “Under the Oaks” and in Diever''.

''Met onze kinderen en kleinkinderen (7 volwassenen en twee kinderen) hebben we een heerlijk paasweekend gehad in Diever. Het huis is heel ruim (grote lichte slaapkamers), en comfortabel en midden in het dorp gelegen. Mogelijkheden te over om er op uit te gaan en als dan het weer ook nog meewerkt, blijft er niets te wensen over. Fam. Groot.''

"This is a charming farmhouse, but conveniently located in a very walkable village. Everything was both functional and comfortable. Probably the best feature is the gracious helpfulness of the owners who live nearby. We arrived late in the evening and they had thoughtfully stocked the kitchen with the basics for breakfast--a marvelous surprise and well beyond our expectations. Throughout the stay they were very wiling to provide local knowledge and tips for things to do. We would definitely stay there again!"

The welcome pack was very useful and the house was more than adequately stocked for four adults and two babies. It was a great first family holiday and we hope to return in the future We really enjoyed our first holiday in Holland"

"Sylia & I cant thank you enough for making our family holiday a very special time for all of us. After to having postpone our vacation a year due to the accident we had & your help in getting it rescheduled, it was as if we had known you both for a few years. For all your help to us & our children is just hard to say thanks, from all of us. The farm house, location in Drenthe, was perfect for all the biking we wanted to do. Your house was very comfortable for all nine of us and your help with bike, train, restaurant and the local open-air Shakespeare theater reservations we greatly appreciated! This being our 5th trip to bike Holland, we have seen a lot of the country, but Drenthe will remain our favorite & we shall return. After a month here we still hate to leave. The accomodations were perfect for a family of nine. David and Monique couldnt have been better hosts, they helped us through our stay in so many ways to make sure we enjoyed our vacation instead of having to do household chores. They took care of us well beyond our expectations. I would not only recommend Under the Oaks to friends, but we hope to go back again in our future. Under the Oaks we will recommend to all interested in really seeing rural Holland. From all of the Rast family who so much enjoyed our stay, we say thanks for making it so through your hospitality. With our best regards, Gary & Sylvia Rast, Williamsburg, Virginia, USA"

''We're on our way back to Texas. Mike and I have really enjoyed our stay here. Our hosts made us very welcome. We would recommend this house to anyone! I have spent a really lovely holiday here with my family. I would point out that I have not ridden a bicycle in over 50 years but I managed it (not sure about my spelling though!!) Really great. The bike rides were fun and have inspired me to carry on when I get home. I may even buy a Dutch bike!! Would love to come back one day''.

''My family just finished a stay at Under the Oaks in Diever, NL, and had an absolutely wonderful time. There was nothing that we needed for our stay that wasn't provided for in the house. The accommodations completely exceeded our expectations! It was so spacious and well equiped! David and Monique are fantastic hosts who truly want their guests to get the best experience possible in the Diever area. The wealth of information that they can provide and assistance was fantastic! We can't wait to go back! A gorgeous house, in a beautiful setting with the grocery store a few doors down, the butcer and baker also just a short walk down the street, and a quick stroll to the ice cream parlour make the setting absolutely perfect! The location is also so central to many activities in the area! We can't wait to go back and visit again on our next trip to Holland. If you are considering staying at 'Under the Oaks', don't hesitate any longer! You can't go wrong with this place!''

''The farmhouse has everything you could want, spotlessly clean and very comfortable. Beds were lovely. Very spacious and roomy. David and family, the owners who live at the back of the accommodation, could not have been more helpful, giving us a tour of the village and finding out anything we wanted to know, and the welcome package was very generous. David arranged the hire of bikes for us, which I would recommend, as the area is beautiful and very flat. Would recommend this accommodation to anybody. ''Our stay at the Farmhouse in Diever was wonderful! It truly felt like a 'home away from home'! We loved that we could walk to the local restaurants and shops....we rented bikes and rode on one of the many bike trails for hours exploring the countryside! Also, loved feeding the horse apples, carrots and bread and waking to the sound of birds each morning! The owners of the house are so helpful and kind and we felt very welcome... How now to have wine and a bag of groceries for us when we arrived!! We were close enough to anywhere in Holland that we wanted to visit ...just a short drive to see the rest of the country...although, we felt so comfortable in the home , we just loved exploring the local area! I will recommend this home to everyone! It was the most wonderful vacation!''

Upon arrival, they had arranged everything we could ever want or need for our stay. They went above and beyond to make our stay perfect. It truly was the best experience I have ever had and I hope to have the opportunity to visit and stay there again. I highly recommend this property for anyone considering a stay in the countryside of the the Netherlands. Wonderful home and environment! Thank you David, Monique and girls!''

''The "Under The Oaks" farmhouse was a lovely property. The principal rooms are large, nicely decorated and have all the amenities you need for a comfortable stay. There are many comfortable bedrooms that can accommodate a large group. The propery location is ideal with close access to all shopping needs in Diever (groceries, baker, butcher, pharmacy, etc) as well as many recreational activities such as the National forest, bike trails, lakes, swimming, short drives to Friesland. The property is a wonderful base to explore Drenthe and Friesland. Lastly, our hosts David, Monique and their children were so hospitable, friendly and extremely helpful. I would highly recommend this property.''

''This is the third time we have stayed at Under The Oaks in Diever! We absolutely enjoy the gracious hospitality of owners David and Monique, the idyllic surroundings and the home itself. The owners always go out of their way to make our stay as comfortable and pleasant as possible. The home is very clean and spacious with many updates done to it over the years. When we arrive, we are welcomed to a gift basket full of delicious foods and drinks. David is there to show us around the home and bring us to the bike rental shop to get our bikes. The first time we came, four years ago, he gave us a tour of the town and the shops we might need use of. When we come to Under The Oaks we feel like it is our home away from home and I would say that the hospitality of the owners has a great deal to do with that. When they found out our son and his girlfriend got engaged a few days after we arrived at their home this summer, they came with a special cake for the occasion. During our stay in Diever, David went out of his way to locate tickets to the sold-out Military Tatoo in Edinborough after where we were traveling to. He helped us with purchasing train, bus and tour tickets to use during our stay in The Netherlands and Scotland. David and Monique's gracious hospitality goes far and beyond what most would expect and that is why we feel this is one of the best places to stay in The Netherlands. The home itself has excellent features: The beds are comfortable, there is plenty of seating in the large living room, the eat-in kitchen has plenty of space, and refridgerator is amply large. Fantastic accommodations!''

It is owned by a lovely couple David and Monique Samson. The House was a Home away from Home for us all. It's a wonderful house with all its amenities. The Kids Loved all the toys and games which were available for them to play with. The Owners David and Monique were very helpful to us. For example getting a 50% discount with some coupons that they had for Slagheren Theme park and also printing out all our ticketsI would most definitely recommend this house''.

''It has been a wonderful Christmas/New Year stay for us in Diever. This house is zo gezellig! We found our bed very comfortable and enjoyed spending time in the large living area. It was especially nice to arrive to a Christmas tree with all the trimmings and little treats and decorations scattered around. We also appreciated the well thought out ‘welcome’ food hamper. It made breakfast the next day nice and easy. The farmhouse is in a great position within the village – perfect as a launchpad for walks to the bakery (excellent selection of yummy Dutch treats!) near the church and for further adventures into the surrounding forest. Thank you for all your helpful advice! Best wishes for 2015''.

''We were very happy with our stay at Under the Oaks. After long days of touring the Netherlands it quickly became a home away from home. Very economical for this family of 7 and married daughter and grandparents. Quite and beautiful village of Diever with beauty of the old and two doors down from a small market place for the necessities of life. Great bike paths and hiking. Thank you for your hospitably. Owner was very helpful. Even took me shopping the first night so I could get what this family needed while not knowing Dutch and getting over jetlag. Always sharing information about sites to see''.

''This fantastic house offers a very high standard of accommodation and facilities - we are a large family group of young children and adults (2yrs to 67yrs) and really appreciate the space in this property. We can all sit together in the lounge and eat at the same table in the kitchen! We have visited 'Under the Oaks' several times and have always received the warmest of welcomes from the owners ho have never failed to provide us with a wealth of information (both local and further afield) as to attractions/excursions and activities to suit us all. David and Monique are brilliant at suggesting new and exciting things to do to keep the kids (and adults) happy. Diever is a very pleasant village (a few cafes, supermarket, a few quirky shops, cycle hire) with lots to do only a drive away - or if you prefer you can simply cycle off into the woods! There is a fantastic amount to do in a relatively small area. We recommend a boat trip in Giethoorn - the Dutch Venice! and Gnomeland is a must for small children! We can also recommend hiring bikes in the village and cycling out into the woods on the fabulous cyclepaths - the Uk has a lot to learn! Diever has the perfect mix of cafes, small quirky shops, a supermarket, petrol stations etc. (There is also an amazing fish van selling fresh/ fried fish that is NOT to be missed!) You don't really need to go anywhere else - the house is great for relaxing in as it has ample space for 12 people to sit and eat together. The accommodation has been prepared to a very high standard and is also GREAT value for money! We will be returning for many years!''

''Traveled to Diever with my father and four teenage daughters. From the moment we arrived, the owners went above and beyond to cater to our jet lag, as well as help with determining an itinerary for our stay. We rented bikes in Diever and enjoyed a day in the forest exploring, not to mention the ice cream shop we encountered. Home is very well maintained, allowing for plenty of room for our large group. Kitchen was much appreciated to help curb spending and eating out so frequently. After spending a day in the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam, it was a welcome reprieve to return to the calmness of Diever. Plenty of restaurants around most within walking distance, which provide a large variety of fare.Thank you all so much for being so hospitable not only during our stay in Diever but being supportive with advice, suggestions, and information in the months leading up to our visit. It was our first trip to the Netherlands and it certainly will not be our last. Your home is very welcoming and definitely exceeded our expectations. The house is beautiful, well maintained and very clean and the owners have really thought of everything you could need. The children’s toys were especially welcome to a 3 year old who was already bored of the ones she brought with her. I wonder if there's something in the draw? Oh, but of course there is! Our hosts, David and Monique have thought of everything. A welcome pack of food for our hungry first few days, loads of fresh towels and this clean, well-maintained property. ''The hosts David and Monique greeted us like we were family, and kept that spirit going throughout our stay, including having a few essential groceries on hand for us upon our arrival. The 4 bedroom home was so nicely decorated, with a cottage feel, and everything you need for cooking a meal if you wanted. And the laundry facilities were greatly appreciated. David was very helpful in advising what sites to take in, and even arranged for bicycles to rent for 6 people. The bike paths are all around this small village, with very interesting points of interest to visit along with beautiful tulip fields if you are there in early May like we were. Diever itself is a quaint village, surrounded by open fields and only minutes from other neighboring villages. It has many shops, a bakery, a number of restaurants and grocery stores with everything you might want, and a great ice cream store open until 9pm. We would highly recommend this as a central location to use when touring this area of Drenthe, which has many interesting stops to make it a unforgettable holiday. We hope to return one day soon. The house had plenty of room, was clean, comfortable, and the location great. Once we had booked David also gave us plenty of very helpful and useful information ahead of time to help us plan our entire trip to the Netherlands and made sure we knew many of the small details to help our trip go smoothly. We enjoyed the village as well and found it very quiet and peaceful. However, the best part about the farmhouse was having David's help! He was our personal travel agent and we were so grateful. David helped us book things, gave us amazing information and tips, and was always helpful with anything we needed. ''We had never been to this part of the Netherlands before and were very impressed at this hidden gem of an area and a property. 2 families stayed for 1 week. The house is in the centre of a lovely village surrounded by National parks and forests. The village has everything a holidaymaker needs (Supermarket, Bike Hire, cafes, restaurants, weekly market) and the accommodation is well equipped. The owner lives in the house behind and is on hand to assist with advice, suggestions of things to do and bookings. When we arrived there was a very good welcome pack left including wine, beer as well as coffee, tea, bread, butter and cheese. Parking is easy and off road. Being Holland it is very flat and great bike riding country and we were pleased to see that there were tarmac bike pathways through the forest making it safe for children to cycle away from cars. For day trips you are about an hour away from the coast or from the border with Germany. However, there is a wealth of information at 'Under the Oaks' with ideas of things to do more locally''.

''Under The Oaks is in an excellent location to discover a treasure of small villages set within this natural, and unique, area of The Netherlands – the province of Drenthe.
David’s fantastic welcome set the tone for our to-be-remembered stay with our family of nine: friendly and open communication, very knowledgeable of the area, walking us through our home-away-from-home, always available to answer any questions, yet respecting our privacy. In other words: Hospitality with a capital H!
The kitchen is the heart of the home. Here it is true! We opened the lovely bottle of wine, part of the welcome gift. “Proost!”, my sister-in-law and I said as our glasses touched. More than you can ask for, and everything you need, is already in place in this well-stocked kitchen. The Coop grocery store is close by and in a short time our groceries were put away. The smaller table is ideal for breakfast – since members of our group drift into the kitchen at different times for, here, you want to sleep in because the beds are so comfortable. The large table is perfect for all of us to gather around during dinner time, and to stay awhile, unhurried, stretching out the mealtime into the early hours of the evening.
Diever is a walking town. Step on the bike-and-foot path next to the farmhouse and you walk past the neighbour’s fields, where a black Frisian horse feeds on the lush grass. This path will lead you to a tranquil park, surrounded by homes. You will discover shops to explore, see the church with its steeple at the centre of town, and continue walking along quiet roads. We stopped and picked apples out of a wheel barrow, a present from an unknown giver, which was made into applesauce to accompany our meal. You will discover another park which is home to friendly ducks, turn the corner, pass a café, walk for a few minutes more, and: You are home''
