Description
Villa Semele is a traditionally-built stone cottage on the unspoilt Greek island of Evia. It is set in an acre of land, features a spacious living area and kitchen with exposed chestnut beams and ceiling, two bedrooms (one double, one twin), both with en-suite bathrooms, a 10mx5m pool and a spacious terrace offering idyllic sunset views. It is some 700m from the nearest (secluded) beach and is only 90 minutes drive from Athens airport.
The cottage is laid out over one floor, with a separate basement for storage and laundry. The spacious living area and the two bedrooms open out onto the large terrace, which in turn overlooks the pool and the north Evian gulf beyond. In the summer this terrace serves as the focal point, whilst in winter the traditional open fireplace with its reclaimed oak beam becomes the focal point.
The two bedrooms (one double, one twin) can comfortably accommodate four people, but if necessary a further temporary single bed can be added to the twin room, enabling a total of five people to be accommodated.
The cottage offers dramatic views of the north Evian gulf and the mountains surrounding it; on clear days Mt Parnassos is visible. Sunset views can be enjoyed all year round.
In striving for sustainability, local or reclaimed materials have been used wherever possible in the construction of the cottage, and almost all furniture has been sourced from antique stores. Hot water is provided by solar energy and all wastewater is treated and then used for irrigation.
Villa Semele offers wi-fi, is fully air-conditioned, and is equipped with a dishwasher, washing machine, bedroom ceiling fans, barbecue, garden furniture, hi-fi, TV and DVD.

Location description
Evia, with a length of 175km, is the second largest Greek island, after Crete, but is relatively unspoilt by tourism. Package tourism has been discouraged by the absence of an airport, and so most tourism has been domestic, consisting of weekending Athenians. The northern half of the island is very green and lush, the southern half more barren, beginning to resemble the Cycladic islands. The middle is dominated by the Mt Dirfys range (reaching 1750m), offering spectacular views and pleasant trekking in pine and chestnut forests. There are fine beaches on both the western side as well as the eastern side, which looks to the Aegean. The local waters produce some of the best seafood and fish in Greece, a real treat for those who enjoy them.
Directions
From Athens airport it is an hour's easy motorway drive (100km) to Halkida, the capital of Evia, crossing over one of the bridges that links the island to the mainland. From Halkida it is another 30km on secondary roads to get to the cottage.
