Cwary Vean (pronounced 'Quarry'!) is off a peaceful country lane with beautiful valley and sea views, midway between Mullion Village and Polurrian beach, (8-14 minutes walk either way). It is ideal for walkers or beach lovers, but conveniently placed as a centre from which to explore the Peninsular's wide diversity of villages, manor houses, exotic gardens, beaches, estuaries, woods and sundry castles (intact or ruined).
Coast/Beach:
The cottage is 400 metres from Polurrian Beach and the coastal path. 15 minutes to the west Poldhu Beach has a bustling cafe serving refreshments all day and they also rent wet-suits if needed to enjoy the excellent surfing at this beach. There is a Surf School where guests can book lessons to learn or improve their surfing skills. 10-15 minutes walk-(longer by car!) beyond Poldhu, Gunwalloe and Dollar beaches are also popular. Mullion Habour is about 20 mins walk to the south. It is a working harbour that has a spectacular 'walk through' cave to an adjacent beach (low tide only, tide chart provided for guests). There are numerous other beaches and walks within 15 to 30 minutes drive away. Kennack Sands is popular with families and Kynance Cove is one of the most spectacular beaches in Cornwall.

Further Details:
Mullion village has a General Store and a Cost Cutter and an excellent Spar shop (open from early morning to late evening). The village also has a Health Centre, Boots Chemist, 2 hairdressers, a beauty salon, an excellent post office, Pasty and Pizza shop, a book shop and a good quality souvenir shop. Sainsburys and Tesco are in Helston about 8 miles away and both will take your order before you leave home and deliver to Cwary Vean for your arrival. There are two pubs (one allows dogs), both do good food. The Galleon serves great fish and chips and The Village Restaurant serves a good variety of dishes. Whilst the village has all you need for your stay without having to get into the car, the peninsular is scattered with great places to eat or visit.
There are many wonderful gardens to visit with Trebah, Glendurgan and The Lost Gardens of Heligan being firm favourites. The Eden project is now world famous and has an 'all weather' appeal.
Many of Cornwall's other attractions are within easy reach. The famous St. Michael's Mount in Marizion has a wonderful castle and gardens and the unique Minack theatre, Cornwall's theatre under the stars, is well worth visiting even if only to look at the Roman like theatre, the views and the exotic plants.
Lizard Peninsular has 5000 acres of nature reserve with a wide range of wild flowers-many of them rare and endangered, a popular venue for botanists and keen gardeners.
There is a wall map of the Lizard peninsular in the cottage and a pocket map of Mullion village to help new guests to get their bearings.
Other activities
Surfing: Polurrian and Poldhu surf school and beach cafe.
Kyaking: Mullion harbour and Lizard.
Mullion Golf Club is a spectacular links course with a good restaurant facility. Visitors are made very welcome-whether playing or just having a meal and walk to the adjacent 'Church Cove'.
There is a small boat trip available from Mullion Harbour and larger river & estuary trips from Falmouth.
Special interest holidays:
Locations and settings for Poldark TV and numerous films both Modern and Classic
Local fishermen will take small parties fishing for mackerel which make a wonderful supper on the barbecue. Polurrian is also favourite for rod and line and the sea bass is even better than the mackerel.
Dressed crab and lobster are available to order as is fresh fish (from named local boats).
Polurrian beach is a favourite with geologists, being divided by a fault line & carrying well marked breccia (geological survey map available on request).
Sailing, kyaking, surfing and horse riding are all available in the vicinity.
Local events
There are numerous events throughout the year and local event details are published. They range from the August scarecrow competition to WI cream teas; from Cricket to Football (strong teams in both sports). There is an Air day once a year at RNAS Culdrose and regular life boat training days to watch at Lizard point. The local Fire Brigade have an annual open day. It is a friendly village community where there is generally something real happening every month.

Accommodation, Facilities and Services
Suitability: | Not suitable for children or infirm, No Smoking, Pets Allowed |
General: | Central heating, Internet Access, Hairdryer Cwary Vean has been a holiday Cottage since 2004, over the years guests have contributed many suggestions which have been implemented to make it a home from home-and many have become friends who return every year but it always good to welcome first timers too! |
Bedrooms: | 2 Bedrooms, Sleeps 4 1 Double/s, 1 Twin/s, 1 Cot/s The twin has a hand basin with shave socket. The double is adjacent to the family bathroom (mixer shower over bath). The bedrooms are separated by the sitting, cooking & diner areas and each has a small hallway. Cwary Vean is quite spacious and private. With 2 TVs and large rooms there is plenty of space for comfortable days in, if you should be unlucky enough to have a rainy day-we are very fortunate to enjoy a micro climate in Mullion which is generally very kind! |
Bathrooms: | 1 Bathroom/s 1 Bath/s, 1 Shower/s, 2 Wash basin/s, 1 Toilets/s There is a washing machine and indoor drying in the enclosed porch area along with a deep freezer and log basket. This area is ceramic tiled and easy to keep clear of beach sand in the summer or muddy boots in the winter. The whole development of the Cottage has been centred on providing a quiet and relaxing experience for all the guests, whilst being in an ideal location to explore any or all of the Peninsular's many attractions |
Lounge: | Seating for 5 people TV, Radio, DVD Player, Large screen TV, Board Games, Books/Magazines This, with the kitchen diner area, is the heart of the cottage. The two and three seater sofas either side of the amiable log burner make for comfortable evenings summer or winter. There is a second Freeview TV and DVD player in the twin bedroom. |
Dining Area: | Seating for 4 people This is an integral part of the heart of the Cottage. Cooking is separate but not cut off from the rest of the party. The roomy nature of the Cottage sets it apart from less spacious holiday homes. Additional seating can be provided if holiday guests have visitors. |
Kitchen/Utility: | Oven, Hob, Grill, Fridge, Freezer, Microwave, Kettle, Toaster, Coffee maker, Dishwasher, Washing machine, Ironing board, Iron There is also an electric blender and caffetieres. One guest review said 'this is the best equipped holiday let we have ever visited'- I try to keep it that way! |
Outdoors: | BBQ, Private garden, Patio table, Patio chairs, Sunshade The patio table & chairs are entirely private and not overlooked-none the less they catch the sun from early morning until well into the evening. There is a Swimming pool in Helston and a great big Atlantic Ocean very close by! |
Access: | Car not essential, Wheelchair, Off road parking There are no stairs or steps-soI think it would be wheel chair accessible but I would like to discuss individual needs in this context to be sure of guest comfort. Is a car essential? Some people have come by train and bus and the bus stops at the end of the lane. Tesco and Sainsburys deliver telephoned orders and the village shops are about 15 minutes walk away-the beach is nearer. So it really is down to personal choice and expectations from the holiday. |
Services: |
Linen provided, Towels provided, Cleaning included, Laundry included Cleaning at the end of the stay is included but we do ask that you leave the Cottage at least superficially clean and tidy. We have to complete change over between 11.00 am and 4.00 pm and are always grateful when guests have given us a good start where cleaning is concerned |
Guestbook
A fantastic week at Cwary Vean!
We spent an idyllic week here at the end of October. The house has all modern amenities, and at the same time had a real cosy period feel to it. Chris the owner couldn't do enough to help us enjoy our stay, and was a real life saver when our car broke down, organising repairs with the local garage. He also made our dog Rollo very welcome-so it gets the thumbs up from the dog too!
A stroll down to nearby Pollurian Cove was a great start to each day, and Mullion proved an ideal base for exploring the delights of the Lizard Peninsula. To be honest there is enough to fill a week just looking around the Lizard-fabulous gardens at Trebar, the wonderful Seal Sanctuary, chilling out and bodyboarding in Kynance Cove, among other joys.
Definite highlight was catching the boat out to St Michael's Mount in a choppy sea, exploring the atmospheric castle, and taking in the magical views.
We felt our batteries were well and truly recharged, and will definitely be back!
A wonderful week in October
We spent a wonderful week in Cwary Vean at the beginning of October. The cottage is nestling in a sheltered area on the way down to the beach. The location is absolutely fantastic. The secluded private garden, totally dog safe, has a gate to the footpath that takes you down to the beach. You can either carry on the Coastal path in either direction, or choose to walk across fields and grasslands. You are walking distance to Mullion, a lovely little village where you can buy fish that has just been caught.
The scenery around The Lizard is absolutely stunning.
We were so welcomed by Chris and Tilly. Tilly is such a friendly and good natured dog. It is lovely to stay somewhere where you feel that your host will do almost anything to help you enjoy Cwary Vean and the area as much as he does. We will be back!

Having just spent a lovely, relaxing two weeks at Cwary Vean, we have re booked for another week next year which is a testament to how much we have enjoyed our holiday. The cottage is situated a 5 minute walk from the closest beach and a 10 minute stroll from Mullion village which has shops, pubs, bakery, takeaways and a large park. Many other fabulous beaches and attractions are a short drive away. The cottage is very well equipped with everything in good order, very clean and is a good size. The owner lives on site and is very helpful and on hand for any advice but also discreet so we felt very private. The secluded garden allows safety for dogs (which are very welcome) and children and overlooks beautiful countryside. The lean-two conservatory includes a large open plan porch area complete with washing machine, freezer and additional storage for garden and BBQ implements (provided). We loved this holiday and would recommend to friends.Recommended for: Families with Young Children, Pet-friendly, Sightseeing, Age 55+, Romantic Getaway.
My Response
Thankyou Jonathon and Rachel, it has been a pleasure to have you, Harry (and Charlie) in the cottage for the last two weeks, we love it when our guests enjoy themselves the way you have. You are a lovely family and we are looking forward to seeing you all again next Spring. In the meantime we will work on your idea of a face book page for Cwary Vean-thank you for the suggestion.
his is our fifth holiday here with our dog Splash. When we pull up outside the cottage it's like coming home with the bonus of a warm welcome from Chris & Carol (owner) and Tilly (dog), who we always look forward to seeing and catching up since we last saw them. Chris really cares about his guests, but never intrudes, but instinctively is there when you need him and will go that extra mile to make sure you have everything you need. The cottage is so comfortable, clean and relaxing. It is tucked away in the most beautiful setting and yet only a 5 minute walk to Mullion village with all the amenities you could ever need. Great pubs, restaurants, post office, health center, vets, food store. There is so much on the doorstep to explore without taking the car out. The most dramatic scenery, and stunning sandy coves. We are always amazed that every time we come back here we discover something new. Everything about this place and its people has captured our hearts, our own piece of paradise without ever having to step on a plane.Recommended for: Families with Young Children, Pet-friendly, Tourists without a Car, Age 55+, Romantic Getaway.
My Response
Thank you Sue and Colin. We always look forward to your annual holiday too. It is a pleasure to see you both every year (and Tilly loves her 'nose to nose' chats with Splash). I am delighted the lovely weather again this September enabled you to enjoy so many of your favourite walks-and to discover some new ones too. See you next year!

Lovely cottage in a secluded location, perfect for escaping the crowds in these COVID times. Well equipped with all you will need on holiday and very clean with areas to store walking gear etc after exploring the coastal paths. Nice garden area to sit and relax with patio table and chairs. Short walk into the village up the lane or down to Polurrian Cove to watch the sunsets. Two pubs in the village and an excellent fish and chip shop, by far the best we've had in a long time. Many local walks and attractions to explore in an excellent location on the Lizard peninsula. We have visited several times and will continue to do so as it is the perfect base for our trip to Cornwall. We'll be back!

On arrival, we were warmly greeted by Chris and Tilly and shown where to find everything. The cottage is superbly located and just a few minutes walk from Polurrian Bay in one direction and Mullion Village in the other. We felt cosy and warm during our stay, the wood-burner was great on colder evenings and the conservatory on sunny mornings for breakfast. The Lizard Peninsular is full of spectacular coves and quaint Cornish fishing villages. The Cafe at the Lizard Lighthouse with its amazing views soon became a favourite. We would strongly recommend Cwary Vean to anyone thinking of a stay in Mullion, you will not be disappointed.
My Response
Thank you for coming to stay and for taking the time to write such a nice review for us. I think this early season part of the year has a lot to offer with the spring flowers in the hedgerows and the promise of Summer returning. We do seem to be lucky with our climate on this bit of the peninsular and Spring sunshine after the winter is just as welcome as our guests! Thank you -come again.

We stayed at Cwary Vean for two weeks, from June 11th. This cottage is well situated within an area for visits to so many lovely places. Chris, the owner is a lovely friendly chap, who could not be more helpful.. The cottage has everything you need for a comfortable stay, including a very comfy bed. Already booked for September 2022.

This cottage is located in a lovely quiet location towards the end of a small lane with breathtaking cliff edge walks beyond. The beach is quiet and only 10 mins walk away. Mullion 15 mins walk with two convenience stores and curry van. Loads to do a short drive away. The cottage itself is homely and simple but has everything you need. Chris is a caring and helpful host. Highly recommended - if its not already fully booked!
What a great and lucky find! I have already stayed here two years running and would have stayed again this year if circumstances had allowed - however I am booked in for 2019! This is the perfect dog friendly cottage from which to explore Cornwall and the property itself is only a few minutes walk through sheep free fields to a perfect sandy cove - idyllic for early morning dogwalks or days on the beach in clement weather. There is plenty of parking and the cottage is spacious and very well equipped with a really useful entrance area for boots, dog towels, coats etc. It is centrally heated, so always warm, but there is also a large woodburning stove for cosy nights in - or days if you are a winter visitor like me! The beds are extremely comfortable and there is plenty of storage space in the bright rooms. Unusually for a cottage, the kitchen and living area is surprisingly spacious which is a bonus as the cottage sleeps four, so no falling over each other - or any pets! The walks either way along the headland to neighbouring coves are perfect, with stunning views and the village is within very easy reach for local shopping or visits to the pubs. Mullion itself is as quaint as only Cornish villages can be, but get in the car and you are within reach of wondrous places all over the Cornish peninsula with something to suit all ages and tastes, from Lands End and the Eden Project to Tintagel - and back via the Minack Open Air Theatre and a plethora of standing stones and burial chambers! Chris, the owner and his dog Tilly are exceptionally friendly, welcoming and helpful, without being in the slightest intrusive. He lives on site with his wife in the property next door and is a mine of local information should it be required. I would add that as a single woman I would feel very safe should I be staying there alone with this immediate access to the owners. I would also say book early - many people, like myself, are returning visitors which actually says it all!
My sister and I really had a good time at Cwary Vean at the beginning of October. The Cottage had everything it needs and was nice and cosy to stay in, it has a great location close to the beach, you can have a nice walk to Poldhu cove and Mullion cove closeby, and we felt safe and comfortable with Chris and Tilly next door to have a chat or to cuddle Tilly. Driving down to the Cottage between the typical narrow walls was a challenge for me at first but after two days it was no problem at all - and we didn't have the smallest rental car with our Vauxhall Mokka X! We explored a lot of Cornwall from here and drove to Lizard Point, Trebah Garden, Penzance, St. Ives, Polperro, The lost Gardens of Heligan and even as far as to the Eden Project and Fowley. It was our first trip to Cornwall and it certainly won't be our last! If we come again we'd love to stay in charming Cwary Vean again!
My Response
Thank you for coming to stay with us. We do try to make Cwary Vean somewhere that our guests feel at home-and it all seems worthwhile when we get happy people at the end of their stay and especially when they say they intend to return. As you said on the last day, there is so much to see and so many places to visit; even after all your trips and the lovely places you discovered there are still more awaiting you next time; you will both be very welcome whenever you want to come to stay again and we very much look forward to seeing you then!
